Ask lbobi Tuesday: After session, when to show images on social media...
Editors Note: Every Tuesday I will make a post of general questions we get from time to time. Here is a good example. Jefflbobi,
This may seem like a stupid question, but its one of those technical questions that photographers seem to just "get" and no one tells you, so forgive me if this is an obvious one....This is a question for everyone/anyone- I was wondering when do you post some edited photos after a session onto your facebook profile, tagging the client?
After you do a photo session, you have to edit the photos, have the Ordering Session, actually give the order to the client, and you want to also post those photos onto Facebook or your blog....So which comes before the other? It seems posting a few edited images on Facebook and tagging the client would generate more responses and excitement, but then again the client may not appreciate that their photos were posted on the internet before they actually received their order. However waiting to post the photos until after you edit all the photos and deliver them to the client could take months! What do the other photographers out there do?

Keylitestudio,
This is what I do, and it's what works for me.
1) edit a few images for the sneak peek
2) post sneak peek on my blog
3) post link on my facebook business page and clients page. I have never had a client complain about this because they seem to love bragging about the images they had done for them. And this is a great way to get you business recognized. Facebook has really helped my business.
4) Finish editing the shoot and provide client with a gallery.
5) Fulfill client order
6) Deliver prints
7) post a few images in an album on facebook.
I post images a second time after I deliver the prints because there might be some people that missed the first link I posted. And I don't want everything to be overkill at first. Could clients steal the images, absolutely. If there's a will there's a way, it's just something we have to accept in this digital age. This is another reason why I only do a sneak peek with low-res images.
Hope this helps,
Pete
I typically friend-request a client as soon as they schedule a session. I figure that way they already know I put everything on Facebook.
Right after I edit all the selected images I do a blog post (which comes up on facebook automatically) and post and tag images on Facebook. I've never had a client get angry either. I know some photographers wait to upload images to facebook until after a client orders, but I kinda figure that clients already have a budget in mind when they schedule a session and posting images on FB is not really going to change that . AND, the potential loss of a few print sales is made up in the awesome advertising potential of FB.
This is what I do...
I don't retouch any images before the client sees them in the sales presentation. Which I do with projection in the studio. After the client orders then I retouch the ordered images and put a few of those on facebook. The number of images that go on facebook is based on their investment. My personal opinion is why would they order the image in a print if they can go on facebook and look at it anytime they want. The goal is to sell prints that is how I make my money. And I want the images to be retouched before they are put on facebook.
I really like Amber's way of handling this, which has me thinking that the "sneak peek" idea may be the reason people are so slow to place an order, and why I've been disappointed with the size of their orders.
Hey!!!!!!!
LOVE that this is being talked about.
I also agree with the super awesome Amber McAdoo (hey you :) To me this is the best way to handle it.
There have been just a few times that I posted before a sale and I wished I hadn't...
A :)
