lbōbi radio: the official podcast of the little blog of big ideas. Ep #1
I am very proud to announce the very first episode of lbōbi radio: the official podcast of the little blog of big ideas.
Allison and I have been talking about creating a podcast for more than two years now but I could never nail down the proper format and structure for the show. Ever since we launched lbobi in January I knew that a podcast built around the blog would be a perfect format. This past weekend I recorded this episode with my good friend Brian LeTendre. He has been doing his own podcast for almost 4 years now and it's his expertise that has enabled me to launch this.
This episode deals mainly with two points. The first point is a brief history of lbobi and the second is what I want the podcast and blog to grow into. It stems from the recent State of the Union post I made on lbobi.
On each lbobi radio episode we will talk about the best posts and comments of the last two weeks. We will also be interviewing people from different creative fields. I want to find out what their creative process is for what they do. Architects, Painters, Novelists, Art Directors, Film Directors etc, they all have something to share that can help everyone else. Allison will occasionally grace the show with her wit and charm but for the most part it will be Brian and I.
I hope you enjoy it.
Leave comments and be kind, it's my first attempt.
Mayor Jeff

First the Mayor and now a radio star. Great first podcast Jeff :) Look forward to hearing from all the different people you have on the radio show. I love the radio logo. :) (ps. you have an accent ;)
Lanne, you're the best thing about Australia.
Great job guys! Looking forward to hearing the Voice of lbobi in addition to reading all the content. I also agree with Lanne, the logo is legit. Am I right in assuming Nick is to blame for it's awesomeness?
The in-post-player is nice too. Simple and straightforward.
Good first outing. Hopefully y'all would get this into the ITunes pipeline?
Things I look for in a photo podcast:
One of the things that attracted me to lbobi and ARP was the relaxedness (new word!) of you two that I saw at PPA tour, and what I read about y'all on the ARP Web site (aside from the hidden volume button that I would really like to be prominently displayed...). What I saw in ARP was a model for success--the incredible creativity coupled with a sound business model. So maybe segments on running the business--e.g., how you use SMS, business tips/tricks/gotchas. On the creativity side, maybe talk about some of the packages y'all provide in the store--brushes, frames, etc. I'm still a little mystified by why/when you would use those, but I don't do a whole lot of design around photographs.
Hmm, there's a thought--segments on design, vs. segments on photography. I mean, we still have to put together a package for clients, right? So maybe suggestions on how some of your brushes/frames/etc., could be used to produce products for the customers. There's lots of information out there about composition, lighting, depth of field, etc. How 'bout something about putting together print packages (what to include--sizes of prints, etc.), about some of the thoughts y'all go through when designing those for the customers. Other design things. I don't know how different that is from composing a photograph in the frame, but I don't know what I don't know, when it comes to design...I'm sure you don't want this to be an advertising podcast (although sponsors wouldn't hurt), but I think you'd be safe talking about your Photoshop offerings.
I'm just kind of brain-dumping here, and that's probably more than enough. If you could fit some of this in with your format, I think it'd be a really informative podcast. I do like the idea of having non-photographers on for guests, to provide some alternative perspectives.
Looking forward to future editions! Hoping it'll be different from, e.g., Scott Bourne's, or DPE's podcasts. I really enjoy those, but no sense duplicating them!
Matt,
That is fantastic feedback! Thank you very much for taking the time to write that. I really appreciate that.
I am glad you like our relaxdness because I really don't know how to be any other way.
Chris,
Yeah, Nick the boy wonder made the logo for us but like most thinks it was a collaborative effort from start to finish.
If Nick might care to take a quick question:
How is it that you achieve your hand-drawn effects? Are you using a tablet to literally draw some stuff? And then what kind of technique do you use to texture your drawings or a the 'sketched' appearance. Are you using Illustrator or Photoshop? I'm trying to get better with Illustrator and creating vector art in my pursuit of graphic design skills so any light you could shed on any of this would be great!
Thanks!
Chris
Chris,
All the hand drawn stuff is drawn by me on a notepad. Once the drawing is refined, I'll then go over it in pen on tracing paper. I like to make 2 passes to make it look a little messier than it really is. Then I scan it in at a high resolution and vectorize it. There are a few more steps involved, but I can't reveal all my secrets ;)
I also may or may not be creating some future weekly specials that will help you achieve that 'sketched' appearance you're talking about. It also works on type as well if you want to make it all look old and worn.

Awesome!! I'm totally looking forward to future episodes!
Love the long post up there by mvnac I'd add workflow and beneficial advertising.
Thank you!
