Love the One You're With

Monday night I attended a PPA (Professional Photographers of America) seminar in Seattle with my dear friend Jennifer.  The speaker said that rather than try to remember everything from the night, she would rather have us take ONE thing home with us to really sit with, mull over, marinate, etc.  When I awoke this morning after a full FIVE hours of sleep, I was surprised with what was marinating.  Heck, I was surprised I had a thought to contemplate at all given the sleep deprivation!  But my artistic right thinking brain was up and ready for the day...the left side of my brain is somewhat annoyed but has assured the right side they'll get over it.  SO, what was it?

The speaker's husband interjected and said,

"the best camera you have is the one you've got".

...ding, ding, ding.  My bells were chiming, sirens ringing, light bulbs burning.

In order to keep the artist in me alive I need to capture what inspires me, what is pleasing and beautiful to my eye, what pushes me on towards new and exciting works of art.

Lately I have been diving into texture.  Texture, texture, texture everywhere.  In nature, in lighting, in clothing, in home design...and on and on.  Vivid color has also taken ahold of me. Needless to say, vivid texture is my muse.

So with the thought of marrying texture and color with the camera you actually have on you, rather than my typical thinking which goes something like this:

Wow, I would love to pull the car over right now and photograph that tree.  It's branches look like they're reaching to the heavens and the green shade is so fresh and crisp.  Oh well, I don't have my camera with me so maybe I'll get to that next year.

But WAIT!  The speaker's hubs said the best camera is the one I've got.

iPhone + Shake it photo application + Texture and vivid color everywhere +  Five minutes to spare in my neighborhood= go time.

didn't even get out of the car...this is where the inspiration struck...shot this through the front window while at a stop light.

Mind you, these aren't meant to be award winning photos but rather to serve as inspiration and the conscience effort to not pass over opportunities because the "real" camera is at home. You'll be seeing more shake~it photos from my iPhone under the category of "Everyday inspiration".

Yes, I realized right after I sent it that I wanted to specifically reference Allison and Jeff so...thank you! I {loved} your talk in Seattle. Keep up the inspiration and keep it weird. :)

I too was inspired by the same exact sentiment. Allison's "it's okay to be weird" hit home, but it was Jeff's iPhone stuff that really inspired me to start shooting for MYSELF again.

Since their stop in Atlanta back in March, there hasn't been a day that goes by without at least one photo taken. Most of my stuff has been people on trains and out and about in and around Atlanta. (http://skyeandraine.com/IPhonography/Mobile/Ootnaboot)

I didn't know what to expect when I signed up for the PPA tour stop here. I kept my mind and heart open and listened intently and I got WAY more than I could ever have expected.

Thanks again Allison and Jeff!
